Construction of the Times Tower, 1904

Construction of the Times Tower, 1904

A view south at Broadway and West 44th Street toward the construction of the Times Tower.  At the time of its construction it was the second tallest skyscraper in New York City.  When its new headquarters opened on January 1, 1905, the New York Times celebrated with a fireworks display at midnight.  The tradition of celebrating the New Year in Times Square continues to this day.

Pennsylvania Station, c. 1930

Pennsylvania Station, c. 1930

View of the ticket concourse in Pennsylvania Station, circa 1930.  Light beams shine down from the massive windows above onto silhouetted passengers.  At the time of this photo, Penn Station was still in it's youth.  Unfortunately, its existence was too brief.  This structure was demolished in 1963.

Empire State Building, 1932

Portrait of the Empire State Building, 1932

View northeast toward the newly completed Empire State Building, with the Chrysler building in the background, 1932.  Built in 410 days, the Empire State Building surpassed the Chrysler Building as the World's Tallest Building, a title the Chrysler only held for 11 months.  The Empire State Building held that title for over forty years.  In this photo it clearly dwarfs everything else in the midtown skyline.
