The photographer stands on the Third Avenue Elevated Train platform looking west on 42nd Street. It's August 1, 1931, and the street bustles with pedestrians and traffic, including eastbound and westbound streetcars. In the foreground on the right are Skopas Chophouse and one of the many Schrafft's restaurants. Further down on the north side of the street is the Chrysler Building, and on the far side of Lexington Avenue is the Commodore Hotel, which is now the Grand Hyatt New York. On the south side of the street, the Loew's is showing Laughing Sinners, starring Joan Crawford and Clark Gable. At the far west, the Park Avenue overpass spans 42nd Street.
