The Flatiron Building, so named because of its distinctive shape, has been photographed countless times by both professionals and amateurs. From its completion in 1902 to the present day, it has been an icon of New York architecture. At 285 feet and 22 stories, it no longer seems a skyscraper, yet it remains as H.G. Wells put it, a "prow...ploughing up through the traffic of Broadway and Fifth Avenue." Perhaps its location, at the intersection of two of New York City's greatest boulevards, is as much responsible for its status among the great buildings of the world as its unusual shape.
