The original Washington Square Arch was erected in 1890 to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of George Washington's inauguration as President of the United States. It was made of wood and plaster, and it spanned Fifth Avenue just north of Washington Square Park. It was so popular with New Yorkers that McKim, Mead, and White was commissioned to design a permanent arch constructed of marble, which was erected just inside the park two years later. In this photo, which looks north, you can see horse-drawn carriages passing through the arch.
