In this black and white photo from the late 1800s, the Dakota lives up to its name, standing amidst a wintry landscape that bears little resemblance to the great urban metropolis of New York City. The Dakota may be the most famous luxury apartment building in the world. Certainly, it is prominent in the consciousness of New Yorkers, and has featured in many novels and films, including Jack Finney's Time and Again. Sadly, most know it as the place where John Lennon was murdered, but that is only one black mark in its long history. Here it is new, and just settling in to its role as an icon of the Upper West Side.
