A zookeeper at the Bronx Zoo holds chimps.  The New York Zoological Society, which was later renamed the Wildlife Conservation Society, had been founded a mere fifteen years prior.  It is obvious in this photo that, despite the serious expression on the zookeeper's face, there is genuine affection between him and his charges.  Look at the way the smaller chimp clings to the man's neck and at how the keeper and the other chimp are holding hands.  The chimpanzees even knew enough to smile, although people of this era rarely did in photographs, probably in part because of the effort of standing still for long enough for the photographer to make an exposure.
